What is an elevator pitch?

An elevator pitch is a short, succinct summary about yourself, and what you do. You should be able to make this pitch and convince someone in the time it takes to ride and elevator (which is essentially about 30- 60 seconds).

When do you use your elevator pitch during the interview process?

Your elevator pitch is big part of how you respond when your interviewers ask the first question of the interview to break the ice: “tell me about yourself”.

This could be a phone conversation with a recruiter, or an in-person interview with the hiring manager when you first sit down. It one of your best chances to get their attention and set the tone for how they view the rest of what you tell them. That’s why it’s so important - because remember, first impressions count!

The good news is: you probably already have an elevator pitch, it just needs to be refined!

Pre-elevator pitch research & preparation

1) Do your research!

Who is your audience (the recruiter / hiring manager)? Check their profile out on LinkedIn before the interview!
Which company are you interviewing for? Add some of their words and phrases so they know you have bought into their culture and want to be an asset within it.

2) Match your skillsets to the job

Why do you think you are best qualified for this job?
What in your skills matches the qualifications required in the job description?
Make sure you select specific relevant projects to highlight your impact and achievements!
